Research Fees
As an Independent Travel Advisor and owner of a boutique, full-service travel agency, I believe in being transparent and professional about how I run my business—especially when it comes to research fees.
Let me explain why I use them and why they matter.
First, every custom trip requires research time. Every single one.
When a client comes to me for a personalized itinerary, I don’t just Google a few hotels and call it a day. I research destinations, compare resorts, check room categories, verify availability, review supplier policies, evaluate tours, transfers, travel insurance options, and build a seamless experience from beginning to end. That takes hours of professional time and expertise.
Independent Travel Advisors DO NOT receive a salary.
I am not paid hourly. I do not get a paycheck for showing up.
Independent advisors like me are paid in two primary ways:
-
Commissions from travel suppliers (such as hotels, cruise lines, and tour operators) after a trip is booked and completed.
-
Research fees paid directly by clients.
Commissions are only paid AFTER a client books and travels. If someone takes a detailed itinerary and books it elsewhere, the advisor receives nothing for the time invested.
That is exactly why research fees exist.
The research fee protects the intellectual property of the itinerary. A custom travel plan is not just a list of links—it is curated expertise. Charging a research fee prevents people from shopping the itinerary elsewhere or “borrowing” the plan without compensation. It ensures that my time, knowledge, and professional relationships are respected.
More importantly, it allows me to focus on clients who are serious about investing in a professionally designed experience.
When someone pays a research fee, it signals commitment. It tells me they value expertise, personalization, and a well-executed trip—not just the lowest price online. That allows me to dedicate focused attention, provide higher-level service, and advocate for them before, during, and after travel.
In a boutique agency setting, my goal is quality over quantity. I am not a call center. I am a professional advisor designing tailored travel experiences.
Research fees:
• Compensate for time spent researching and planning
• Protect custom itineraries from being taken and booked elsewhere
• Ensure I can prioritize serious travelers
• Allow me to maintain high-touch, concierge-level service
Travel planning is a professional service. Just like an attorney charges for consultation or an interior designer charges for design time, independent travel advisors charge for the expertise that goes into creating a seamless travel experience.
When clients work with me, they are not just booking a trip. They are hiring a professional to design, manage, and protect their investment.
That is the value of a research fee—and why it is an essential part of operating a full-service boutique travel agency.
